Azerbaijani athletes who participated at the III edition of Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, ARG, returned to Baku. Two heavyweight athletes – Tarmenkhan Babayev and Lala Rzazadeh were among them.
At the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the athletes were welcomed by the leadership and delegation of the Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation, relatives of athletes and media representatives.
Both of our athletes – Tarmenkhan Babayev and Lala Rzazadeh shared their views on the competition interviewing to the Mass Media representatives.
Head coach of the weightlifting team Asif Mammadov touched upon the performances of two weightlifters during the interview and counted the silver medal as a vital event for the history of Azerbaijan weightlifting.
General Secretary of AZE WF Rizvan Rasulov has been hopeful of continuation of success in other promising competitions, highly appreciating the struggle of our young athletes in the Olympic Games.
From 17 Azerbaijan athletes participating in the Olympic Games, 2 of them clinched gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. Judoka Vugar Talibov (66g) and freestyle wrestler Turan Bayramov (65 kg) achieved gold, but weightlifter Tarmenkhan Babayev (85 kg) was runner up, however taekwondo player Javad Aghayev (63 kg), boxer Nurlan Safarov (60 kg) and female wrestler Shahana Nazarova (43kg) were bronze medalists. Rhythmic gymnast Yelizaveta Luzan triumphed at the International Olympic Committee’s mixed team. Her medal was not shown on behalf of her country in the overall ranking.
In conclusion, according to the quality of medals the Azerbaijani team ranked 34th out of 208 nations and 38th in the medal standings.
